WGRE is a student-run radio station at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Radio broadcasts began at DePauw in 1941 and WGRE was established as the first 10-watt educational radio station in the nation in 1949. WGRE currently operates a twenty-four hour schedule, staffed by two hundred student DJs, making it the largest student organization at DePauw. Our station produces reputable sports broadcasts, timely news coverage, and is an industry leader in the promotion of up and coming alternative music.
In the past year, WGRE has been recognized for awards from MTVu, the Indiana Broadcasters Association, the Society of Professional Journalists and also the Indiana Associated Press, with the station often competing with professional broadcasters. Additionally, the station has been represented in the top ten of the Princeton Review rankings for fourteen consecutive years, having been named the #2 College Radio Station in America in 2011 and 2012.
